How do I choose the right kayak for me? |
Answering these questions will help steer you in the right direction How long will you be paddling - for an hour or two, a day or an overnight trip? Are you paddling in flat or choppy water? Will the water / weather be cold or warm? Who else is using the kayak? Are you bringing lots of gear when you paddle? Or do you want lots of room for yourself? Where will you store your kayak? We're always happy to talk to you about kayaks! |
What's so special about RTM kayaks? |
It's really the little things that make the difference Gear straps & D - rings are molded in, providing stronger fittings than rivets Blended in UV inhibitors ensure rich, long lasting colours & extend the life of the kayaks Superior finish & attention to detail - See for Yourself |
What do I need to bring with me in the kayak? |
Transport Canada requires every kayak to have on board - 1 Canadian approved PFD per person 1 sound signalling appliance - a whistle (pealess) attached to your PFD 1 buoyant heaving line at least 15m long - a throwline / towline works well (not required for SOTs) bailer or pump for kayaks 6m & longer - a watertight flashlight |
What else would you suggest? |
Leave your trip plans with a friend water bottle. sunglasses. hat. food. knife matches. map. first aid kit. paddle float spare paddle. waterproof flashlight. compass. flares |
Do I need a rudder or skeg? |
If you are battling waves or wind where you paddle a rudder / skeg will help keep you on course without tiring your arms out making corrective strokes You don't need one for flat water ( with a well designed kayak) |
What is the difference between them? |
Rudder sits on top of kayak when not in use offers more storage in rear can be angled in an offset position Skeg is a fin that lowers from box in rear reduces storage room in rear can't be angled like a rudder but... can be set to different depths less likely to be lifted out of water in waves creates less drag than a rudder |
Are the storage hatches really waterproof? |
ALWAYS pack your gear in waterproof / dry bags. Especially Electronics! In a kayak no place is ever 100% waterproof! |
What size paddle do I need? |
Paddle size depends on - Width of your kayak. Your size. Your paddle stroke It's best to try out different lengths to find the paddle most suited for you! for medium kayaks 22.4" - 25" / 57 - 63cm wide (general guideline) for paddlers 5' - 5'3" / 152 - 160cm ... 210cm paddle 5'4" - 5'7" / 162 - 170cm ... 215 cm paddle 5'8" - 5'11' / 172 - 180cm ... 220cm paddle 6' - 6'3" / 182 - 190cm ... 225cm paddle 6'4" + / 192cm + ... 230cm paddle for narrower kayaks decrease paddle size by 5cm for wider kayaks increase by 5cm |
Can a small child fit in the cockpit with me? |
Small children usually love to be in kayaks The gentle rocking motion often puts them to sleep But by age 5 not only are they too big but they want to paddle themselves! We recommend putting them in the front of a double kayak By age 8 most kids can safely kayak their own boat They really enjoy the independence & sense of accomplishment it offers |
Can I stand up to fish? |
Our fishing kayaks are quite wide & stable We offer a stabilizer kit with 2 outriggers & fitting system for added stability when standing up to fish |
Is a kayak more comfortable than a canoe? |
In a kayak your legs are stretched out in front of you In a canoe your legs are usually tucked under you Most people, especially as you get older, find the sitting position more comfortable in a kayak |
Is it easier to learn how to kayak or canoe? |
There is a much shorter learning curve with a kayak However this is not a wrestling match between kayaks & canoes! Both are lots of fun. For overnight trips you can carry a lot more gear in a canoe than a kayak |
What is the most common mistake when buying a kayak? |
If you haven't done much kayaking before you are so concerned about tipping & stability you often end up buying a wider kayak than you need However the more you kayak, most people realize they want a narrower, faster kayak that will track well in the water There is a short learning curve with kayaks You are not just buying for today but for years of kayak fun |
What if I need to repair my kayak? |
Your kayak is under warranty for 2 years. Please contact us with any issues. Customer service is our specialty. For repairs that are not warranty issues - We are happy to send you a FREE repair kit + guide you through the process |
